In this era of instant communication, it is interesting to see how organisations are adapting to social media.  How many CEOs now permit Facebook or other interactive media to be used in the workplace (and the answer is still not all....).  How many companies are actually using social media to connect to their consumers, customers, suppliers and business partners (and this is growing as organisations understand the value of interactive media to build relationships).  But how many CEOs are using social media to connect with their employees?  As workforces get more global and disparate, there has to be a better way for managers to communicate with their employees than the traditional email that just tells employees what the manager wants to tell them.  As workforces get more spread out, and there is no longer a single office or factory where everyone works, the traditional management concept of "Managing by walking about" becomes much tougher.  That is the opportunity for social media that allows managers to have a dialogue with their employees and so build deeper relationships between employee and employer in the same way the corridor conversation in the past was able to do.
